5 Golden Rules of Laser-Targeting Keyword Research

Ever wondered what the best keyword phrases are to lead your target customers to your website?
A few weeks ago, I received a tip from a Google Adwords fanatic. I took his words seriously and mastered this supersonic laser-targeting keyword tool with the noble name Market Samurai. As you may know, Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan. These Samurai followed a set of rules that came to be known as Bushido (“Way of the Warrior”).
The art of keyword research requires following 5 golden rules. Obey these rules and generate laser-targeting keyword phrases that enchant your audience.
#1 Define your niche market
Before you start with keyword research, make sure you define your niche market well.
Your market is the community of people who share a common interest in your product or services. Your market niche is a subset of this specific market. An example could be home business owners in Calgary.
Step in the shoes of the people who are part of your niche market. Reflect their needs and desires. Which words or key phrases do these people enter into search engines to explore your niche? The next rule will help you get started.
#2 Focus on Keyword Relevance
Generate keywords which are highly related to your niche market. Imagine you create a website for social media coaching. Enter the phrase “social media coaching” in Google Keyword tool. This will give you a lot of results, like social media help, social media specialist, social media service or social media solutions. Some are good and some are bad. Select the most relevant ones for your niche market.
#3 Find Keywords with Sufficient Traffic
Traffic means the number of people that click on your link (url). Do not confuse this with the number of people that search for a specific key phrase.
Google offers 10 spaces on each page result. Every website owner wants to appear on the first page for specific keywords. Ideally be number 1. Results show that the number 1 ranked website receives 42% of the clicks. The number 2 (12%), the number 3 (8%), the number 4 (6%) and the number 5 (5%).
Choose keywords with many searches and claim the number 1 position on google to get 4 clicks out of every 10 searchers. Google keyword tool tells you exactly the number of monthly searches for each keyword phrase.
#4 Define Commercial Value of your Traffic
Use high commerciality keywords. Each keyword has a commercial value based on advertisers demand. Define how much money a certain keyword phrase will add to your bank account. Google adwords tells you the average CPC (cost per click). How much are buyers willing to pay for one click on your keyword. The higher the cost, the more commercial value.
#5 Track your Competition
Knowing your competition is the most important rule, but it is often forgotten!
There are 2 main aspects of competition: the amount and the strength. You can build whole lists of keywords that are really easy to rank for. Choosing keyword phrases with too much competition leaves you empty handed.
To discover your competitors, type the keyword phrase in the search engine. The top 10 shows you who your opponents are for the best places on the first page of Google. Consult Alexa if you want to delve into the strength of your opponents.
Conclusion:
Laser targeting keyword research is an art, also known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO). With these 5 golden rules you will quickly and easily get in touch with your niche market. If you don’t know how to do it, I advice you to hire an SEO expert. Someone who has the skills and uses the best professional tools. Like a Market Samurai.
However, making sure that all your traffic comes from only SEO is not a wise strategy. It’s about diversity and getting as many possible sources of traffic to your website as possible. Adding the right social media strategy and knowing how to engage with your audience gives you a killer strategy to outwit your opponents.
